Group 1 Golden Rose Betting Preview
Saturday 23 Spetember
Rosehill Racecourse

Sydney’s flagship three-year-old event of the spring, the Golden Rose, takes place this Saturday at Rosehill Gardens in what looks to be a cracking renewal of the time-honored event. This year’s edition will see twelve colts and two fillies engaged over the 1400m as they race for their share in $1 million in prize money.

The Gerald Ryan trained Menari currently heads the market and comes into Saturday a justified favourite following a resounding win in the traditional lead-up, The Run To The Rose. Currently a $2.00 chance with BlueBet, this imposing son of Snitzel has gone to a new level as a three-year-old, with the dry tracks in Sydney especially aiding the colt in being able to display his electrifying turn of speed. Despite never having run over the 1400m, the punters seem undeterred with Menari already attracting a host of early bets.

Pariah for team Snowden occupies the second line of betting at $6.00 having gone down a length and half to Menari in The Run To The Rose. Connections have always felt we would see the best of Pariah out to seven furlongs and he should get the last look here ridden cold from the wide draw.

The Melbourne visitor Merchant Navy is a slight firmer into $8.00 having touched $8.50 earlier in the week. Trained by Ciaron Maher, Merchant Navy puts his unbeaten record on the line on Saturday but from all reports has worked extremely well at Rosehill since arriving in Sydney earlier in the week.

The chances don’t end there though, with Gold Standard for Waterhouse and Bott ($12), Assimilate ($14), Formality ($19), and Chauffeur ($21) all attracting a sprinkling of money at the double figure odds.

BlueBet’s Michael Sullivan agrees that Menari has the class edge.

“It’s hard to get away from Menari,” says Sullo. “Both wins this time in have been super and he just looks so tough. I wouldn’t be deterred at all by the wide draw. He should find a nice spot 2nd or 3rd pair back, peel off them and explode. If he gets 1400m he looks the winner.”

If they go too hard in front, Sullo’s tipping the Snowden pair to be the one’s charging at them late.

“Their does look to be a stack of speed engaged so if they overdo it in front I like Pariah and Assimilate,” said Sullo. “Pariah will be much better suited ridden cold and Assimilate is a real line chaser. He flew home off a slow tempo in the Ming Dynasty and we know he gets 1400m. He’d be my each-way play in the race.”
