Race Overview

The Winterbottom Stakes is Ascot Racecourse premier weight-for-age event over the 1200 metres and sits as the second of three Group One events during the carnival. Barrier eight has produced the most winners since 1983 with six.

Race Speed

Valour Road will no doubt take up the speed from barrier 3 along with Belter who has drawn the rails. Runson could present an interesting dynamic to the race as he seeks to track across the field and take up a position just off the speed. Early favourite Viddora maps to do no work and should find a spot with cover. I’ll Have a Bit and Enticing Star will spot the rest of the runners a start at the back of the field.

Key Runners

  1. Viddora ($3.00)

A two-time Group One including winner once over this distance in last year’s edition of the Winterbottom Stakes. Charged home to claim the Moir Stakes first-up before not handling the track in Sydney to finish worse than midfield in the Everest. Let-up seven weeks – has trialled impressively since.

  1. I’ll Have a Bit ($12.00)

Placed both runs this prep over five furlongs and possesses two victories from four starts over this distance – will relish the step up in distance. Ran third to Santa Ana Lane in the Goodwood during Autumn of this year and there is no better form than that.

  1. Enticing Star ($6.00)

A lightly raced five-year-old but a winner of eight from nine – knows how to find line. Last start lacked usual dash however was found to be in season the day before the race. Blinkers go on first time while in-form hoop William Pike on board is a bonus.

Race Selection

  1. Viddora ($3.00)

Forgive his last run on the bottomless Randwick track – Santa Ana Lane and Brave Smash have also subsequently come out and won Group One races after not handling the track. Looks to be a class above the field here and can go back-to-back in the Winerbottom this Saturday at Ascot.
