The Group 1 Kennedy Mile (registered as the Cantala Stakes) is one of the premier Group races throughout the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, held on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival - Derby Day. The prize purse for the race sits at $1 million with the winner taking home $600,000. Favourites have performed surprisingly poorly in the race, winning only 6 times since 1983. Notable winners include; Divine Madonna, Better Loosen Up and Testa Rossa.
Race Speed
Expect early speed from either Sircconi or Cliffs Edge, however there is speed drawn wide in the race which should ensure a solid tempo. Siege of Quebec should be prominent and Dreamforce is likely to be in the first couple. Hartnell looks to get a great run in the centre with Le Romain. Land of Plenty will likely be toward the back couple of runners.
Key Runners
- HARTNELL ($6.50)
Has been excellent in his last two runs, finishing first in the Epsom in record time and then following that with a strong 2nd behind Land of Plenty. Looks to get a great run here just behind the leaders back and looks to be one of the main chances. The class of the race. Carrying big weight however.
- LAND OF PLENTY ($4.40)
Outmatched Hartnell last start in what was an impressive win in a strong field. Start prior to that was the run of the race and only missed narrowly. No doubt in form, but a little bit concerned about how far back he will be in this race, might have to come wide. Long Flemington straight will be suitable.
- CLIFFS EDGE ($7.50)
Huge win last week at Moonee Valley up against Siege of Quebec. Was heavily backed that day and duly saluted. Will be less suited here in the long Flemington straight, but can control the race out in front and could be tough to run down in the straight.
Race Selection
- HARTNELL ($6.50)
Has been in cracking form his last two runs and is rock hard fit. Gets a gun run here and at his best blows this field away. Main chances in Cliff’s Edge & Land of Plenty look like they could have tough runs and this could be the difference. Classy horse.
