The Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes is one of the premier middle-distance races held during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is generally held on the first day of the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival; Derby Day. The race is generally considered one of the ‘grand finals’ for middle distance fillies and mares during the Spring. Despite its short history, the race has been won by some high-level fillies and mares, including; Divine Madonna, Typhoon Tracy and Red Tracer.
Race Speed
There doesn’t look to be a tonne of speed in the race apart from the speedy Shumookh who should show the way. I Am a Star should be prominent from barrier 3. Invincible Gem and Bella Martini are likely to be the next two. The rest of the field looks extremely bunched toward the back of the field but expect a few of these to push forward.

- INVINCIBELLA ($9.50)
Great win two back, finishing over the top of them as she likes to do – the Flemington track here suits. Last start ran well despite being up against a leader bias at Caulfield, where Shumookh took out the race. Consistent horse and a good chance here.
- SHUMOOKH ($9.50)
Great last start win over the aforementioned Invincibella, in a race that suited her due to a leader bias at Caulfield. Not taking anything away from that run, but jumping back up to 1600m could test her, she was less effective two back at Randwick over 1600m. Should get an easy time out front however.
- AMPHITRITE ($4.60)
How impressive was this filly last start? Looked to be in an impossible position on the turn but managed to round them up and storm over the top of them. Absolutely eats up 1600m and looks extremely hard to go against here!

Massive win last start in the 1000 Guineas where she showed a dazzling turn of foot to storm home over the top of her rivals. Shumookh should ensure a decent tempo here and the long Flemington straight should suit her to a tee. Take some beating.
