The Everest. With a prize pool of $13 million, The Everest is Australia’s richest race and the richest turf race in the world and it’s shaping up to be an absolute thriller in 2018. The field is wide open, with all runners genuinely staking a legitimately claim to win the race. Redzel took out the inaugural running of the Everest in 2017 and is looking to go back to back here.

Race Speed

Of the runners to make the final field, Redzel will be taking up the running from barrier 1 and should get a relatively easy lead. There are any number of ways this race could be run, but it seems that Vega Magic is likely to push up also from a wider barrier and shouldn’t have much trouble doing so. Trapeze Artist and Shoals should be prominent also. Viddora may have to go back from the widest barrier and other runners such as Osborne Bulls, Santa Ana Lane & US Navy Flag should be at the rear too.

Key Runners

  1. REDZEL ($7.00)

Should be able to get a relatively easy lead from the inside barrier, but there’s no telling if that’s a benefit with the track likely to be heavy and inside potentially chopped up. Was brilliant first up, before putting in a relatively poor run (by his standards) in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes. Could very well rebound here and be tough to run down in the straight. The first & only Everest winner!

  1. SANTA ANA LANE ($8.50)

Really started to hit his straps last prep, culminating in a huge Group 1 win the Stradbroke which was eye-catching as he weaved through the field to score comfortably. Scored a narrow win last start over Shoals at Randwick when showed his customary sprint to finish. Multiple Group 1 winner and serious chance.

  1. VEGA MAGIC ($7.00)

Couldn’t have been more impressive first up in the Bletchingly before jumping up in distance to contend the Group 1 Memsie Stakes when losing narrowly to Humidor. Back to 1200m here, but never ran on a heavy track (soft form is solid). Was luckless in second here last year.

  1. SHOALS ($8.00)

Only missed a place once in 12 career starts. Seemed to find the 1000m too short first up before putting in a fantastic ‘trial’ for this race when defeated narrowly by Santa Ana Lane whilst 3 wide no cover throughout the race. Should get a beautiful spot in the run.

Race Selection

  1. VEGA MAGIC ($7.00)

Instead of “Who can win the race?”, we should be asking “Who can’t win the race?” – every horse has a serious chance of winning, with the race one of the most open Group 1’s in some time. Nonetheless, I’ve gone with Vega Magic who seems to be slightly forgotten here. The win in the Bletchingly was outstanding before rising to 1400m, which could bode well here (1200m on Heavy will feel like 1400m). Looks to get a great run in transit and should be in the finish.
