Euro 2020: Belgium vs Russia – 13th June @5am
Belgium are among the favourites for Euro 2020 as the Red Devils kickstart their campaign with a clash against Russia.
For all of Belgium’s talent in the past decade, they have largely flattered to deceive, but an admirable semi-final defeat to France at the World Cup in 2018 might be the launching pad to deliver the Red Devils their maiden major trophy this campaign.
Like Belgium, Russia had a fantastic World Cup in 2018, that should prove they should not be underestimated – particularly on home soil in St Petersburg.
In what could be a blow for Belgium, they could potentially be without star man Kevin De Bruyne for this match, who is still recovering from facial surgery following an injury sustained in the Champions League final.
On paper, the Red Devils still should have the quality to deal with the absence of De Bruyne and they beat Russia twice in qualifying for Euro 2020, but the home advantage for Russia should give them a major boost.
Players to Watch
Romelu Lukaku: If this golden generation of Belgian players are finally going to live up to the hype, then talisman Romelu Lukaku needs to have a huge tournament. Lukaku lifting for Belgium hasn’t been a problem in the past, though, already bagging 60 goals in 93 appearances for his country.
Artem Dzyuba: Like his opponent Lukaku, Dzyuba steps up when he plays for his country. The 32-year-old has scored 29 goals in 52 international caps, including eight in qualifying for Euro 2020.
