OVERVIEW

Racing in Melbourne shifts to Sandown this week with the Zipping Classic the feature on a marathon ten race card. This year’s race has assembled a solid field of nine stayers all looking to add their name to the honour roll. Godolphin’s Avilius currently heads the market at $4 with BlueBet and is looking to bounce back after a very plain effort in the Melbourne Cup.

SPEED MAP

Looks below standard speed here with Levendi your likely leader from Sound who should roll across from the outside alley. Brimham Rocks and Princess Jenni can hold positions next from Avilius midfield. Future Score, Scarlet Dream, Lord Belvedere and Attorney all find their positions off pace.

KEY RUNNERS

1. AVILIUS ($4) Damien Oliver/James Cummings

Class runner of this field looking to bounce back off a disappointing run in the Melbourne Cup finishing 22nd, beaten 20 lengths. Willing to put the pen through that run as he’s shown in the past that he just doesn’t get 3200m. Run prior in the Caulfield Cup was outstanding. Was blocked for a clear run in the straight and should have finished much closer with even luck. That form is good enough for this. Take out the run in the Cup and he would be much shorter in the market. Also worth noting that horses backing up from the Melbourne Cup into this race have a fantastic record, having won five of the last nine editions. Been over a year since he’s won but he gets his chance here and looks value at the current price.

5. FUTURE SCORE ($5) Fred Kersley/Matthew Cumani

Really interesting runner who continues to raise the bar this preparation with a strong win in the Cranbourne Cup two back, before running really well last start in the Hotham when unsuited. Got back off a slow tempo and was checked in the straight before really picking up the bit late to charge through the line (3rd quickest last 200m of the race). Showed he had absolutely no issue running out the trip and looks to really peak here 4th up. Biggest danger to Avilius for mine.

4. SOUND ($4.40) Jamie Kah/Michael Moroney

Hard to knock this stayer who arrives here sixth up off a second placing behind Ashrun in the Hotham. Travelled beautifully that day and looked all over a winner only to be run over late in the shadows of the post. Obviously super fit and looks to get another good run here for the in-form Jamie Kah. Will look your winner at some stage, just whether or not he gets it soft enough to hold them out will be the question.

TOP PICK

AVILIUS ($4)

Very happy to be in the corner of Avilius here at the price. Is way back in grade in what looks a very winnable race for him. Take out the run in the Cup and the $4 would be considered a luxury. This doesn’t look a testing 2400m, which will suit him as he has the best turn of foot and the small field means he won’t have to spot them a huge start, which has often been his undoing in the past. Keen.

Good luck punters!
