OVERVIEW
The Winterbottom looks an interesting race this year, with local runners taking on a few gallopers who have made the “trek” over. William Pike was able to guide thread the needle on favourite Inspirational Girl last week in the Railway Stakes and he again secures the ride of short priced favourite Trekking here. Will he be able to secure his second Western Australian Group 1 race in just as many weeks?
SPEED MAP
Slightly smaller field than last week, which makes it slightly easier to map out. Condor Heroes should be the leader from Indian Pacific and Red Can Man should be prominent also. From there, either Vital Silver, Malibu Style or Valour Road should be able to sit just behind those. Elite Street and Mankind draw wide, but may elect to push forward also. Favourite Trekking should sit just off the pace.
KEY RUNNERS
- TREKKING ($2.20)
Certainly brings a massive class edge into this race, having competed against the best sprinters in his three races this prep. He’s yet to record a win for the prep, but has two second placings and a fourth at Group 1 level. That’s top form for this race and he will certainly prove extremely hard to beat if he can match those performances.
- RED CAN MAN ($14)
Thought he could run well last week and excluding the favourite, he went as good as any other. The 4YO gelding went on a tear earlier this year, rising through the grades and winning four consecutive races in impressive fashion. He has been thereabouts in all runs this prep and gets another good run on speed.
- INDIAN PACIFIC ($7.50)
Handy galloper who scored a nice on speed win first up, before jumping up in grade and going down narrowly on a very Heavy track to the likes of Celebrity Queen and Stageman. He’s still only lightly raced with nine starts for six wins, and he showed last start that he still has plenty of upside to come. He will be aided by a nice run on speed and might prove tough to run down if he’s clear in the straight.
BLUEY’S PICK
- TREKKING ($2.20)
Impossible to go past Trekking here. He brings a huge class edge into this race after facing the top sprinters in the country for the entire prep. He has actually been a touch unlucky this prep and could easily have a Group 1 win on the scorecard. Pike will be keen to make it back-to-back Group 1’s in a week, and if he gives Trekking the right run, he should be winning this.
