OVERVIEW
A small, but quality field assembles for this year’s Flight Stakes, which is the first of three Group 1 races at Randwick, on what looks to be a sensational day of racing. The fillies look well matched here, with Dame Giselle and Hungry Heart set to duel for the third time this prep. The score is currently 2-0 in favour of Dame Giselle, but there’s been nothing in it both times. Can Hungry Heart turn the wheel and score Group 1 success?
SPEED MAP
Tactics could play a huge part in this small field, with the favourites set to bookend the field. Dame Giselle should be the likely leader jumping from gate 1, with Vangelic set to challenge from gate 3. Joviality and Miravalle should slot in behind them with a gap back to Alighted. Montefilia and Hungry Heart should round out the field.
KEY RUNNERS
- DAME GISELLE ($2.55)
Has been superb this prep, going from strength to strength on her way to three consecutive victories at Group 2 level. It hasn’t always gone to plan for her either, she raced keenly last start and was wide without cover the start prior. Looks to have taken the next step this prep and is deserving of Group 1 success.
- HUNGRY HEART ($2.30)
Very talented galloper, but has been bested by Dame Giselle twice so far this prep, but has also had excuses in both runs. She put in a great first up run, and then was hampered at the 300m last start. She can certainly take improvement from those two runs and go on with it here, but she’ll need to get past Dame Giselle.
- VANGELIC ($11)
Also comes into this with the same formlines as the favourites, however she has been just a notch below the top two in both runs this prep. She has led throughout both races and just failed to match them at the end. Will be rock hard fit now and with some luck, she could definitely find victory if she can hang on in the final stages.
BLUEY’S PICK
- DAME GISELLE ($2.55)
It looks hard to pick between the top two, but I’m siding with Dame Giselle, who has got the better of Hungry Heart in each run this prep. She’s also got a little bit of upside left, as she’s faced a bit of trouble in the run. She also maps positively and if the race turns tactical, she’ll have the drop on Hungry Heart and might be too hard to run down.
