OVERVIEW
This looks like another quality race to round out the Group 1 races on Day 2 of The Championships. The field is headlined by the super consistent Funstar, who drops back to 1600m after putting in a subpar performance at 2000m last start. The race is wide open though, with last week’s Doncaster winner Nettoyer the second elect at $8.50.
SPEED MAP
Pace looks to be genuine here, with Miss Siska likely to push up from barrier 1 and hold out Amangiri for the early lead. Sweet Deal, Con Te Partiro and Positive Peace are all likely to push forward as well, meaning we might see an early bustle for the lead. Funstar maps toward the middle of the field and last week’s Doncaster winner Nettoyer looks to be the backmarker.
KEY RUNNERS
- NETTOYER ($8.50)
Nettoyer was highly unfancied last week but overcame the odds to score a scintillating win from the back of the pack to take out the Doncaster. It may not have been a vintage edition of the race but I have to respect the performance and she looks right in this again.
- POSITIVE PEACE ($10)
Just how good has she been this prep? She’s now scored 5 wins on the trot, ranging from BM70 all the way up to Group 2 level in her latest run. She proved far too strong there and looks to be a genuine winner. This is no doubt her hardest test to date and it would be a truly remarkable scene if she could score a Group 1 victory here.
- FUNSTAR ($2.75)
Funstar endured a tough run last start in her first go at 2000m and it told late, she weakened out of it to finish 1.4L away from Shout The Bar. Prior to that, she had been proving to be a model of consistency and was quietly putting together an impressive record. Brings the best form into this and looks to be a deserving favourite.
BLUEY’S PICK
- FUNSTAR ($2.75)
More than happy to take the shorts about Funstar here. She had excuses last start and still managed to hold on for only a 1.4L defeat. Back to 1600m here and should be able to get a much cosier run. This race brings genuine competition but I’m confident this talented filly can get the job done here.
