OVERVIEW
The Champagne Stakes is one of the last Group 1’s of Sydney’s Autumn Racing Carnival and is run for 2-year-olds over 1600m. It’s also the last leg of the 2YO Triple Crown. Looks to be another great edition of the race this year with Sires Produce winner King’s Legacy heading the field.
SPEED MAP
Holyfield looks to get the run of the race out in front and shouldn’t face much pressure. He can run them along to his liking. Glenfiddich and Untamed look to be the next two in the race. Fayerra and King’s Legacy should be prominent also from inside barriers. Not An Option might be next from out wide.
KEY RUNNERS
1. KING’S LEGACY ($2.60)
Was solid first up in the Golden Slipper, cutting the corner and holding his own in the straight. Jumped at $19 last start but scored a solid win last start in the Group 1 Sires Produce, which is no doubt the strongest form for this race. Shouldn’t be far away here.
5. UNTAMED ($11.00)
Has only been beaten once in his career, which was two starts back versus Holyfield. He rebounded from that defeat with a perfectly timed surge to the line in the Fernhill last week to defeat Wheelhouse and Fayerra. Showed that he could handle 1600m and can improve again off that run.
6. OLE KIRK ($4.00)
Two starts back was badly blocked in the Group 2 VRC Sire’s at Flemington behind Lunar Fox but once he was out, he hit the line well. Was brave to the line last start in the Group 1 Sires Produce last start behind King’s Legacy. He looks like one that will enjoy 1600m and he can potentially take the next step here.
BLUEY’S PICK
5. UNTAMED ($11.00)
Favourite King’s Legacy brings the strongest form through the Group 1 Sires Produce, however, the race was not particularly strong overall, so there might be room for improvement for another runner here. That runner might just be Untamed, who showed he could perform at 1600m, out-toughing the other runners to score a nice victory last start. Can improve again here.
