OVERVIEW

The Caulfield Guineas takes place immediately after the Thousand Guineas, and it looks set to be an absolutely cracking 1600m. There are a number of talented horses in this field, but they each have their question marks, which makes the race so fascinating. Three of the top four in the market map at the rear of the field, but they have put in eye-catching lead-in runs and should be storming home in the final stages.

SPEED MAP

Should be an interesting speed map here, with the field somewhat devoid of genuine midfield/prominent runners. The pace should be genuine however, with Crosshaven and Grandslam likely to lead in the early stages. Tagaloa should also go forward with 1-2 others, but the rest of the field maps toward the rear, including Ole Kirk, Mo’unga and King’s Legacy.

KEY RUNNERS

  1. TAGALOA ($6)

Tagaloa has been impressive throughout his short career, winning the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes impressively last prep and competing in the Golden Slipper two starts later. He returned with a huge run first up, which looked to set up a big prep for him. He was wide last start in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke, but still managed to finish just 1.8L from Behemoth.

  1. OLE KIRK ($3.30)

Is the early favourite here after two impressive runs to kick off his prep. He was good behind Rothfire first up, and then put in a strong run last start to wear down North Pacific in the Group 1 Golden Rose. That looks like the ideal lead in form here, but there are some question marks around where exactly he gets to in the run.

  1. MO’UNGA ($6)

This Waller trained runner seems to be the x-factor in the race and looks to have enormous upside to come. He’s only had three career starts and is yet to be beaten. Not only has he won all of his races, but they have been in emphatic fashion too. He faces some question marks over where he will settle too, but it’s hard to argue with his raw talent

BLUEY’S PICK

  1. TAGALOA ($6)

Tagaloa looks the most likely for me here. He maps on speed in a race that should suit, whereas the other main chances all map toward the rear of the field. He will have the drop on them rounding the turn and he’s proven that he is a top class horse in the past. Should look the winner at some stage in the straight.
