OVERVIEW
The Caulfield Guineas is the headline race of the weekend and also sports the largest purse of any race this weekend with a whopping $2 million in prize money engaged. This has obviously attracted a quality 3-year-old field which includes the likes of; Dalasan, Alligator Blood & Kubrick. Dalasan holds the best lead in form but draws awkwardly in Gate 18.
SPEED MAP
Tempo should be solid with Roccabascerana set to lead them away from the inside barrier. The Holy One should also be prominent early along with Groundswell and Alligator Blood who should cross from the wider barriers. Dalasan draws awkwardly in Gate 18 which opens the field right up. We can expect the rest of the field to be strung out due to the large number of runners engaged.
KEY RUNNERS
- DALASAN ($3.40)
Deserved favourite after two wins this prep at black type level over some seriously quality horses, including Scales of Justice. Last start in the Guineas Prelude, found one better in Alligator Blood who lines up again here. Alligator Blood had a much better run in transit that day and the extra 200m should suit Dalasan here.
- ALLIGATOR BLOOD ($5)
Brings an unbeaten record (5: 5-0-0) into this race after progressing through the grades beautifully during his career. Hadn’t really faced much competition until last start, when he lowered the colours of the aforementioned Dalasan in what was an impressive win. Will look to measure up here again and continue on his winning ways.
- KUBRICK ($8)
Talented horse who nearly tasted Group 1 success last prep in the JJ Atkins but was narrowly denied by the flying Prince Fawaz. Has been okay this prep without being spectacular, finishing behind Bivouac on both occasions. Could improve greatly third up and has the talent to win but would have liked to see a bit more from him so far this prep.
BLUEY’S PICK
- ALLIGATOR BLOOD ($5)
Whilst I think that the field size could ultimately result in a boil over, I think the top three in the market are the clear top picks here and I’m siding with the unbeaten Alligator Blood who was ultra-impressive last start in the Prelude against Dalasan. With the favourite drawn out, Alligator Blood will have a head start around the bend and that could prove the difference.
