The Victoria Derby, run over 2500m for three-year-olds is one of the oldest races in the world, dating back to 1855. It’s generally an interesting race as most of the young stayers are yet to stretch out to such a race distance. Notable winners of the Victoria Derby include; Phar Lap, Tulloch and Efficient.
Race Speed
All eyes will be on Thinkin’ Big here, and he should be able to lead them away fairly easily. Savoie and Tolemac could opt to go forward from their wider barriers . Sikorsky should get a nice run in behind the leaders. Aramayo maps toward the back of the field with Mickey Blue Eyes and Savvy Oak.
Key Runners
- THINKIN’ BIG ($2.90)
Had a torrid run two back in the Spring Champion Stakes when vetted at the barriers and then was wide the entire. Prior to that won impressively and Group 3 level and last start couldn’t have been more impressive at Caulfield, scoring by a lazy 3L. Looks to get a gun run here and could take beating.
- ARAMAYO ($6.50)
Decent start to this Godolphin runners’ career, missing a place only once in his six starts. Was beaten only narrowly at Randwick (finished ahead of Thinkin’ Big) before going to Moonee Valley where he had excuses against the bias. Can hit back here.
- SAVOIE ($9.50)
Looks to be a talented horse for D K Weir, performing strongly so far this prep including an extremely impressive 4L victory in the Victoria Derby Trial at Flemington three starts ago. Was only narrowly beaten last start at Moonee Valley and looks to be one of the main chances.
Race Selection
- THINKIN’ BIG ($2.90)
Although Aramayo ran right by him two starts ago, it’s hard to be against the Gai Waterhouse trained Thinkin’ Big here. Should go straight to the lead and be relatively left alone which is the key. Had a tough run against Aramayo and I think he looks a top chance to take out the Derby here.
