Race Overview
The 2019 renewal of the TJ Smith Stakes looks set to be one of the best races in Autumn, with a number of Australia’s top sprinters lining up here. The quality and depth of the race is so deep that every horse in the race has either won or placed at Group 1 level. The race has everything from the frontrunning Redzel to the electrifying Osborne Bulls who will be well fancied and looks to add another notch to Godolphin’s belt.
Race Speed
Looks to be a frantic tempo in the 2019 edition of the TJ Smith with numerous runners vying for the lead. Ball of Muscle is likely to cross and lead from an outside barrier, along with Sunlight. Snowden has commented that Redzel may be better bowling along and may be another likely leader here. Osborne Bulls is the likely backmarker.
Key Runners
- REDZEL ($8.50)
The ever consistent Redzel has been anything but that this prep, particularly last start in the Galaxy where he was exceptionally poor. First up he was beaten by Ball of Muscle but there was merit in that run. Snowden is terrific at having his runners prepared for the big races and notably Redzel was able to bounce back from a similar run to take out the Everest in Spring.
- TRAPEZE ARTIST ($4.20)
Trapeze Artist has showcased his superb talent on multiple occasions and that has rightly earned him favouritism here. On the other hand, in the past he has put in some flat runs where he has simply failed to turn up. No doubt has the talent to win the race and comes off a dominant display in the Canterbury Stakes.
- SANTA ANA LANE ($7.00)
Has been dubbed Australia’s best sprinter on a handful of occasions and just continues to turn up on the big stage. Finished 1.5L away from Sunlight in the Premiere Stakes first up and looks to be suited by the pace up front. Multiple Group 1 winner who looks to be a decent price!
- OSBORNE BULLS ($4.60)
Likely to be the best backed runner in the race after two narrow defeats to start begin his prep. His usual get back, run on style looks to be suited here with the rail in true and expected fast tempo. The Godolphin stable has been flying recently and “The Bull” looks primed to break through for his maiden Group 1 victory.
Race Selection
- OSBORNE BULLS ($4.60)
The Bull has been excellent this prep and could easily have two wins to his name – he was simply too far behind in both of those races. The frantic pace up front should suit him to a tee and I’m confident he can finish over the top of the field here to score his maiden Group 1 victory.
