The Thousand Guineas is a Group 1 race for 3-year-old fillies at Caulfield during the Spring Racing Carnival. Looks to be a fantastic edition of this year’s Thousand Guineas – the first of four Group 1’s at Caulfield. Last year the race was won by Aloisia and other notable recent winners include; Global Glamour, Atlantic Jewel and Miss Finland.
Race Speed
Doesn’t look to be much speed in the race here apart from Smart Melody who should be able to lead easily from barrier 2 and control the race. Mirette or Anjana may push forward from their wider gates. Amphitrite probably has no other option but to go back from the widest barrier. Qafila will likely find the back from barrier 1.
Key Runners
- THRILLSTER ($6.50)
Endured an extremely tough run in the Thousand Guineas Prelude last start when 4 wide with cover at Caulfield, but still managed to finish 2nd only beaten a length behind Smart Melody. Prior to that showed nice fight when winning at Moonee Valley. Could get a nice run here from an inside barrier and looks to be a main contender.
- SMART MELODY ($2.70)
Unbeaten filly who is looking to make it 6 from 6 in her career. Was brilliant in the Prelude when sat with the leader on a strong tempo and burst clear for a nice win. Looks to get an uncontested lead here and if she can control the race she will be extremely hard to beat. First go at 1600m only concern.
- AMPHITRITE ($9.50)
Has been brilliant this prep winning 3 from 3 including a very impressive win last start at Flemington in which he beat Krone by 1.8L over this distance. Looks to be a strong type, but have to be concerned about where she gets from the wide barrier.
Race Selection
- SMART MELODY ($2.70)
Anything can happen with 3-year-old racing as they are still improving and can hit new peaks without warning but am happy to go with Smart Melody here. Should be able to control the race with no pressure from the inside and that should offset any query (if any) about the jump to 1600m. Has been excellent so far in her career and no reason to jump off.
