The Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes is run for the top staying 3-year-olds throughout Spring in Sydney. The race can be used as launching pad into the Victory Derby later in the Spring. Notable winners of the race include; Savabeel, Kingston Town and It’s A Dundeel. Amazingly, Yankee Rose is the only filly to take out the Spring Champion.

Race Speed

Tim Clark should send Thinkin’ Big out to lead them off here. Cloak and Home Ground may also inject some speed from their wider barriers. Overall, the tempo should be at least moderate. Irukandji should be able to get a nice run in behind the leaders and Tarka may hunt up the rail one or two pairs back. Frankely Awesome should be the backmarker here.

Key Runners

  1. THINKIN’ BIG ($3.50)

Winner of three from four career starts including an impressive 2.5L victory last start when jumping up to 1800m. That win was impressive as seemed to kick on strongly from his competitors, including Tarka and Irukandji. Up an extra 200m here which could test, but could control this from the front.

  1. TARKA ($8.00)

Had his flag lowered last start by Thinkin’ Big after winning three on the trot prior to that. Was slightly hindered at the start and winner was able to control out in front, but never really looked like beating Thinkin’ Big that day. Can definitely return to the winners circle.

  1. FRANKELY AWESOME ($8.50)

Frankely Awesome has been just that in her career so far, unleashing two long sustained sprints to score impressively in both her career starts. The 3-year-old filly out of Frankel (arguably best middle distance horse of all time) looks like she will go onto bigger and better things in her career and it could start today.

Race Selection

  1. FRANKELY AWESOME ($8.50)

Tough race with a number of winning chances. I’m willing to go with the x-factor in the race here who could get a shot at them late here with the right run. Can easily improve up to the 2000m and with the tempo expected to be good the spacious Randwick track could be right to her liking.
