Race Overview
The Railway Stakes is raced under handicap conditions over a distance of 1600 metres at Ascot Racecourse in Perth. It is the first of the three Group One events during the Ascot Racing Carnival and was first held in 1887. Last year’s victor Great Shot returns to defend his crown from barrier ten
Race Speed
Great Shot will more than likely roll forward to assume leader’s position while Iconoclasm should seek a position just behind along with Material Man and Gatting who will do no work to sit just off the speed from the inside draw. Early race favourite Galaxy Star will be spotting the leaders a start.
Key Runners
- MATERIAL MAN($14.00)
Comes into the race first-up where he has recorded three wins from four starts. Appreciates the distance and holds a 61 percent win record so he knows where the finish line is. Carries the top weight of 57 kilograms, however should be strong here.
- GALAXY STAR ($3.40)
Has won and placed in both runs this prep over the 1400 metre distance. Was hitting the line strongly in his last start win and as a lightly race six-year-old, will have plenty to give in the final furlong. Gets right back in the running, but will be looking to storm over the top if a run opens up.
- ICONOCLASM ($9.00)
Is one of several Eastern raiders who have made their way across the Nullarbor for the Perth features. Chased steadily in the Group One mile on Derby Day at Flemington but very impressive in both victories prior.

Terrific winner of this race last year when basically dominated a field of good horses! Excuses in his last start and prior to that form was solid. The field here is not overly strong and he looks well positioned to go back to back here.
