The Mackinnon Stakes is Flemington’s premier weight-for-age event over 2000 metres and now sits as the penultimate race of the week-long Flemington Spring Carnival. The race has an illustrious honour roll, including past champions; So You Think, Lonhro, and Rogan Josh.

Race Speed

Trap for Fools will more than likely lead ahead of It’s Somewhat and 2016 Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon. International raiders Blair House and Latrobe will look to sit back off the pace and attempt to launch late along with last start winner Shillelagh.

Key Runners

  1. Blair House ($2.30)

Only just missed last start when a neck back to Benbatl in the Caulfield Stakes. Was running on strongly there along with start prior (Underwood Stakes) and should be fitter for it. Has placed four times over this distance and also has a Group One victory over 1800 metres in Dubai. Holds the Charlie Appleby polish and looks to be right in the finish here.

  1. Latrobe ($5.50)

An Irish Derby winner in June of this year, this Lloyd Williams owned stallion will have no trouble finishing off down the Flemington straight and looks very well off a seven week freshen-up from his second in the Irish St Leger.

  1. Shillelagh ($7.50)

Was enormous in winning the Empire Rose Stakes last start over the 1600 metres, has been attacking the line and potentially in career best form. Steps up to the distance for the first time but retains the services of in-form hoop James McDonald and will be right there at the business end of the race.

  1. Extra Brut ($8.00)

Similar to Latrobe, this Derby winner will have no trouble seeing out the distance and gets in to the race with only 51.0kg on the weight-for-age conditions. Really liked the last start victory. Could be a chance here.

Race Selection

  1. Blair House ($2.30)

Looks to be the deserving favourite on the back of two strong performances. Took Benbatl to the line who in turn was second to Winx in the Cox Plate and weight-for-age form lines do not get much better than that.
