Race Overview
The Golden Rose is arguably the ‘crown jewel’ of 3-year-old Spring racing boasting an extraordinary $1 million in prize money. Whilst the field only holds 11 runners this year, the race is extremely competitive as many colts & one lone filly will look to take out the crown. The race is often used by 3-year-olds to increase their breeding value. Trapeze Artist won the race last year, joining high profile 3-year-olds Astern, Exosphere & Paratroopers who have previously taken out the race.
Race Speed
The Golden Rose could be run a number of ways this year, but it’s likely we’ll see Danawi cross and lead the way from either Jonker or Sandbar. Pace could be an interesting factor in the race as many of the key chances map towards the rear of the field. Either way the backmarkers shouldn’t have too much trouble finding room in the small field.
Key Runners
- THE AUTUMN SUN ($4.60)
First up was too bad to be true when badly blocked in the straight (admittedly the jockey did try to forge a passage, but had no luck) at Randwick, which ultimately saw the colt’s unbeaten run come to an end. When clear though, he did show an impressive turn of foot, it was just simply too late. Will be better 2nd up and can definitely rebound here.
- GRAFF ($3.50)
First up scored a nice win here over the smart Neutrality when sat behind the leaders and went straight past them in the straight to win by 2.5L. Last start was a horror watch which saw the colt bumped on numerous occasions, causing him to become unbalanced and also enduring a wide run throughout. To his credit, he kept finding for 2nd which was a testament to the talent he has. Can hit back here with a better run in transit.
- SEABROOK ($9.50)
Seabrook is the lone filly in the field and she definitely looks to be a major player in the market. First up after a long spell finished third in the G3 McNeil Stakes behind the smart Native Soldier and will take huge improvement from that run. Notably Damien Oliver comes up from Melbourne to take the ride.
Race Selection
- GRAFF ($3.50)
Whilst I think The Autumn Sun will be hard to beat, it’s hard to go past the class in the race & I have no doubt that Graff ticks that box. The first up win was extremely impressive, and he had many excuses last start when beaten. Barrier is a query, but confident he will atone here.
