Race Overview
The Doncaster Mile is packed to the rafters with quality this year which is fitting for what is arguably the number one race in the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Placegetter in the All Star Mile, Alizee was a late entrant after being scratched last week and only adds further quality. Veteran horses Hartnell & Le Romain take on the new crop of upcoming superstars in what looks to be a superb edition of the race.
Race Speed
Pace should be at least even here with Dreamforce likely to take up the running from a middle barrier. Brutal may push forward from an outside barrier to challenge for the lead and Fundamentalist may punch up on the rails. Expect horses to be fanning 6-7 wide in the straight as is always the case in such big fields.
Key Runners
- HARTNELL ($9.00)
The old veteran Hartnell is now 8 years old but is still putting in top line figures including narrow second last start in the All Star Mile where he found traffic in the straight. With a clear run he may have won that race and likely jumps favourite here! No doubt Cummings will have him tuned up here and will be featuring in the finish.
- ALIZEE ($7.00)
Third in the All Star Mile last start where she simply peaked on her run and just found a couple too good. Still ran excellently there to continue an excellent preparation for the mare which includes 3 wins. Was scratched last week on a wet Rosehill track and now subsequently runs here. Whether that is a hindrance or not is yet to be seen, but I think you can be comfortable in thinking Alizee puts in another solid run here.
- FIFTY STARS ($8.00)
Form in his first two starts this prep looks worse than what it was. Was unsuited first up at the tight Moonee Valley circuit and had respiratory issues the following start. Rebounded off those runs to score two consecutive wins and now jumps as one of the top chances here. Has been headed for the top level for a while now and gets his chance to break through here.
- BRUTAL ($5.50)
Up against Winx last start and put in a fantastic showing – a 3.5L defeat to the great mare. It did, however, look at one brief second that Brutal was going to give Winx a battle and the Hawkes trained runner stuck on gamely for second, with third place a further 3L back. That form is obviously solid for this and he continues to improve with each run. Wide barrier will be testing.
Race Selection
- HARTNELL ($9.00)
Hartnell draws a fantastic barrier (7) here and should be able to get the run of the race. The old boy is going as good as ever and will be peaking here. Alizee has beaten him twice this prep, but I’m confident that with the right run he can turn the tables here. Classy horse who will give you a great sight here.
