The Caulfield Guineas is one of Melbourne’s oldest races, dating back to 1881 and is one of the premier mile races for 3-year-olds during the Spring Carnival. The Caulfield Guineas is worth $2 million in prize money. The race is generally light on fillies due to the Thousand Guineas being run a few races prior. The Autumn Sun looks to hold the keys to the race this year. Other notable winners include; All Too Hard, Lonhro and Manikato.
Race Speed
There doesn’t look to be too much speed here with Tavisan the most likely to lead them away here. Native Soldier might opt to hold the rail from barrier 4 and it’s likely that Leonardo da Hinchi will also be prominent from a wider barrier. Oohood should be able to get into a decent position from barrier 6. The Autumn Sun finds himself in an awkward position toward the rails at the back.
Key Runners
- THE AUTUMN SUN ($1.90)
Likely the top 3-year-old in the country at the moment after two brilliant returns, including a dominant last start win in the Golden Rose against a top field. Prior to that was given no chance of winning when blocked for a run. Draws a shocking barrier here, but on current form against this field that looks about the only thing that could stop him.
- NATIVE SOLDIER ($6.50)
Interesting runner for Weir here, was very strong last start when winning by 2L in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and controlled the race throughout. Forgive the run prior to that when vetted & pulled up lame. Looks to get a great run in transit here, but will need to go to another level to challenge The Autumn Sun.
- OOHOOD ($9.00)
The world’s richest maiden tag was finally shaken from Oohood last start after taking out the Group 1 Flight Stakes in a lunge at the line. That win was impressive and form around her has been quite strong, but she is a noted non-winner and comes up against red-hot The Autumn Sun here.
Race Selection
- THE AUTUMN SUN ($1.90)
The Caulfield Guineas looks to be his for the taking on current form. Has been nothing short of spectacular in his career so far and given clear air, we should see that customary sprint for him to finish over the top of his rivals. Gun jockey McDonald on board a plus too.
