OVERVIEW
The Australian Oaks is the feature middle distance staying race for Fillies during the Sydney Autumn Carnival and the 2019 edition looks set to be a cracker. Verry Elleegant is a red hot favourite after two brilliant back to back wins and she’ll look to add another Group 1 to her tally. However, it’s not an open and shut case as she draws a wide gate here, making it an intriguing renewal of the Oaks.
SPEED MAP
Pace should be moderate to quick with Happy Every Day the likely leader from a middle barrier. Maracaibo may also opt to sit outside the leader or in the first few. Verry Elleegant draws a very awkward barrier in 12 and James McDonald will have to make an early decision on whether she goes forward or back. Frankely Awesome is your backmarker.
KEY RUNNERS
- VERRY ELLEEGANT ($1.60)
Scored somewhat of a breakthrough run two starts back, absolutely dominating the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes by 3.5L. Last start scored another easy win as a hot favourite over 2000m. Still does a lot wrong in her races but she is very talented! Will be rock hard fit here and extremely tough to beat.
- ARISTIA ($8.00)
Has finished third in all of her runs this prep – two of which have been won by Verry Elleegant. She has fought on gamely in all of those runs this prep, particularly last start where fought hard for third. Looks to be a level below the favourite here but maybe the extra distance will suit.
- FRANKELY AWESOME ($6.00)
Has improved with each run this prep and is knocking on the door for a win. Two starts back finished behind the talented Pohutukawa before flashing home last start behind Verry Elleegant in the Vinery Stud. That last start run was eye-catching – she was eating up the ground late and extra distance here could suit her to a tee!
BLUEY’S PICK
- VERRY ELLEEGANT ($1.60)
Verry Elleegant still does a lot wrong in her races but the talent she displays is second to none. Has thrown her head around in the last two races and still managed to score dominant wins in both of those runs. The distance shouldn’t be a problem and if she relaxes during the run she should be far too good here.
