OVERVIEW
The final Group 1 of the Sydney Autumn Carnival is here and again has attracted an intriguing field of sprinters jumping out to 1400m and milers dropping back to 1600m. The race is by no means an afterthought though and has attracted a superb field this year including overseas import D’bai who scored an impressive win last start in Dubai.
SPEED MAP
Looks to be a moderately run race with a number of runners likely to look for the early lead including Manuel and Siege of Quebec. Le Romain draws wide and may elect to push forward. Naantali is also likely to be prominent from an inside barrier. Towards the rear we have the overseas import D’Bai who has options and also noted backmarker and race favourite Osborne Bulls.
KEY RUNNERS
- OSBORNE BULLS ($2.50)
Perennial bridesmaid Osborne Bulls lines up here again today and despite generally being known as a sprinter, does have some form at 1400m including a win. Has been a model of consistency this prep finishing 2nd in all three of his runs. I’m not quite sure what to make of him at 1400m at the current price, but one thing we know for sure, is that he will give it his all.
- PIERATA ($5.00)
The talented Pierata is yet to break through this prep, but gets a really good chance here. He has finished close up in each of his starts so far this prep, including a narrow defeat to Nature Strip two starts back. Last start put in a very similar run to Osborne Bulls and finished very close to the placegetters despite being held up for part of the straight. Should be in the finish.
- D’BAI ($5.00)
Yet, another one of Charlie Appleby’s runners first up in a Group race! Hopefully he fares a bit better than the touted Dubhe did in the Sydney Cup last week! Comes here off a very strong victory in Dubai, scoring by nearly 2 lengths ahead of Mythical Magic who has since gone on to win again at Group 2 level. Lines up with a great chance here.
BLUEY’S PICK
- D’BAI ($5.00)
Despite that flop on Dubhe last week, the Appleby stable has proved a recipe for success in Australia and I’m backing another Appleby victory here. The overseas form surrounding him looks very strong and that last start win was superb. He looks like a 1400m specialist and with a couple of question marks over the other favourites, he can take his chance here.
