Race Overview
The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a premier 3-year-old Group 1 event which is held down the Flemington Straight during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The sprint race is run over the ‘straight six’ at Flemington. There is a high stud valued tied to the Coolmore and as such is targeted by the top male Colts. In the last 30 years, only seven fillies have won – with six of them coming since 2000. The race has an illustrious honour roll, including past champions; Manikato, Encosta De Lago, Weekend Hussler, and more recently Brazen Beau.
Race Speed
Speed looks to be relatively straightforward here with Written By and Sunlight the two likely leaders. Zousain and Encryption look to be the next two in line, followed by Thorondor. Lean Mean Machine and Sesar should be towards the rear. The pace should be even.
Key Runners
- WRITTEN BY($4.20)
Talented sprinter who has only been beaten once in his career – an impressive stat but slightly less impressive when the one who beat him (Sunlight) lines up against him here. Nevertheless, Written By has gone to a new level this prep, recording strong wins in both his starts and he looks to get a great run up front.
- ZOUSAIN($4.20)
Some serious form lines surround this Chris Waller colt – he was close up behind Graff who is a serious Group 1 horse and followed that up with a narrow defeat behind The Autumn Sun (we all know how good he is!). Has had a bit of a freshen for this race as he is back to 1200m and looks to be a strong chance.
- SUNLIGHT($4.50)
Was only plain (by her standards) last week in the Manikato but had excuses and still managed to finish only 3.2L from the eventual winner, Brave Smash. Was excellent before that and has also recorded a win over Written By previously. Should get a good run out in front alongside Written By and could be too speedy with the light weight
Race Selection
There looks to be three main chances in the race which I have mentioned above, but Zousain is the one I’m most keen on. Form prior to her freshen was against some of the top sprinters in Australia and she can carry that through here. Waller will have her raring to go here and gun jockey McDonald aboard is always a plus.
