Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m)
Doomben Racecourse
Saturday 19 May 2018
The Brisbane Winter Carnival rolls on with the running of the time-honoured Group1 Doomben Cup this Saturday.
Australian racing hall of fame inductee Chris Waller has strong hand in the race saddling up 6 runners in the 12 horse field including former Japanese galloper Satono Rasen ($5.50), Comin’ Through ($10), One Foot In Heaven ($67), Life Less Ordinary ($12), Egg Tart ($13) and perennial bridesmaid, Tom Melbourne ($10). The well-travelled Life Less Ordinary has been the best backed of his lot firming into $9 from an opening quote of $12.
The most well supported runner in the race is Oregon’s Day from the Mick Price year who has firmed $5 into $4 on the back of her strong win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes a fortnight ago. She’s drawn well in barrier two and will be hard to run down.
Of the others, early favourite Ambitious has been easy in early betting out $4.60 from an opening quote of $4.20 for Anthony Freedman. Not to be discounted, punter’s pal Darren Weir, saddles up Tradesman ($13) who is coming off a soft win during the Warrnambool carnival. Not your traditional lead up for the Doomben Cup but you would be a brave punter to count out any Weir runner.
