About the George Main Stakes Race
The George Main Stakes (also known as the Colgate Optic White Stakes) is known as the premier weight-for-age event held at the prestigious Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
It is held over a distance of 1600m and generally attracts the top milers from around the country and also some elite 2000m horses. The race has a prize purse of $500,000, and the winner also gains ballot exemption for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap.
History of The George Main Stakes
The George Main Stakes was inaugurated in 1945 and was named after former chairman of the Australian Jockeys Club, George Main. The name of the race was changed to the Colgate Optic White Stakes in 2015. The race is often won by the elite race horses including champions; Winx, Lonhro, Shogun Lodge and Kingston Town.
