Coolmore Stud Stakes General Information
The Coolmore Stud Stakes is a premier 3-year-old Group 1 event which is held down the Flemington Straight during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The sprint race is run over the ‘straight six’ at Flemington – a distance of 1200m and each year attracts the top 3-year-old sprinters. There is a high stud valued tied to the Coolmore and as such is targeted by the top male Colts.
The race is generally held on Derby Day, the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Coolmore Stud Stake has a prize purse of $1 Million with a hefty $600,000 going to the champion of the race.
History of The Coolmore Stud Stakes
The Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as the Ascot Vale Stakes) was inaugurated in 1863 and was initially a 2-year-old event run in the early Spring. The race was even removed from the calendar at one point in 1965, before being reinstated in 1969. In 2006, the event was moved to Derby Day and was upgraded to a Group 1 event.
The race has an illustrious honour roll, including past champions; Manikato, Encosta De Lago, Weekend Hussler, and more recently Brazen Beau.
