AFL 2024 Brownlow Medal Winner - The Contenders
With each game bringing thrilling displays of skill and strategy, the race for the Brownlow Medal intensifies with every round. Join me as I chat about the contenders vying for the title of Brownlow Medal Winner in what is sure to be a season filled with unforgettable moments.
Nick Daicos ($6) - Scoring a huge 28 votes in just 22 games, this kid is a real standout. If he gets a full season under his belt, he's the clear frontrunner, no question. Heading into his third AFL season in 2024, everyone's buzzing with anticipation for what he'll bring to the field. With an average of 31 disposals per game last season, he's primed to step up even more in the midfield, especially with Pendlebury and Sidebottom on the way out. It may sound boring to back the favourite, but I'll be putting my money on Daicos.
Lachie Neale ($10) - The reigning winner with 31 votes last year, is known for his consistent performance with votes of 31, 28, 8, 31 and 26 over the last five years. His reliability on the field has earned him the title of "Mr. Consistent" and Lachie should be right around the top 5 once again.
Marcus Bontempelli ($11) - The Dogs skipper had another outstanding year in 2023, securing 29 votes, which marked the second-best tally in his career. He's getting near the end of his prime so I think he'll be motivated to finally get over the hump in 2024.
Sam Walsh ($12) - His talent on the field is undeniable, yet a preseason back injury casts some doubt over his chances. He also faces the challenge of sharing the spotlight with Cripps, who commands significant attention in terms of votes. If he can play a full season without injuries, Walshy should be right up there. But for now, he needs to show more consistency in terms of injuries.
Errol Gulden ($14) - He emerged as a massive bolter in 2023, securing a notable 27 votes after only polling a total of 5 votes in his first two seasons. This dramatic improvement will undoubtedly place him on the radar of opposition taggers, who are likely to pay him closer attention this year. Additionally, the absence of Callum Mills for an extended period is set to significantly alter his role within the team dynamics.
Christian Petracca ($15) - Petracca has consistently showcased his talent with 20+ votes in each of his last four seasons, yet he has not yet clinched the coveted medal. As he matures, there has been a notable shift in his role, with increased time spent forward during the 2023 season. But I still think he's good value to give the medal a run in 2024, especially with Oliver having a few offseason question marks and Gawn isn't getting any younger.
Tom Green ($15) - Showed significant improvement last season, elevating his disposal average to 32 and securing a commendable 16 votes, marking his best haul yet in his career. As he enters his fourth season, expectations are high for further growth and development, particularly with veteran players like Kelly and Conigilio getting on. I think Green is poised to continue making an impact on the field in 2024 and will be one to watch, especially if the Giants make the finals again.
Patrick Cripps ($16) - Despite facing challenges including injuries and age, Cripps managed to secure a commendable 22 votes last year, following his impressive win with 29 votes in 2022. While it may not have been his best year, he continues to be a formidable presence on the field. He faces stiff competition for votes within the team, particularly from talents like Walsh and Cerra. But when the Blues win, he'll be in the votes for sure and I think the Blues should make the top 4 with their lineup, which should help Cripps poll votes too.

St Kilda Team Votes
Jack Sinclair emerged as a pleasant surprise last year, amassing 21 votes, a significant feat considering he had never previously polled over 10 votes in total. This unexpected rise in recognition coincided with his increased involvement in the midfield, a shift prompted by injuries to key players like Steele and Crouch. Demonstrating his adaptability, Sinclair seamlessly transitioned into this role and thrived, evidenced by his impressive average of over 27 disposals in his last two seasons. This newfound versatility and consistent performance highlight Sinclair as a valuable asset to his team's midfield lineup.

Adelaide Team Votes
Jordan Dawson transitioned into the midfield during the past year and appears poised to potentially take on a full-time midfield role in the upcoming 2024 season. Notably, he achieved the best disposal average of his career in 2023, tallying an impressive 27 disposals per game. This performance did not go unnoticed, as he garnered 20 votes, placing him on par with Laird in the vote count. While the competition between Dawson and Laird promises to be closely contested, the formidable presence of the Adelaide skipper makes him tough to back against.

Richmond Team Votes
In his first season at Tigerland, Tim Taranto showcased his prowess on the field by averaging an impressive 28 disposals per game. This stellar performance saw him secure 19 votes, marking the best tally of his career thus far. With the absence of players like Cotchin (retired) and Dusty (playing more forward), Taranto has the opportunity to further assert his influence and solidify his position as a key contributor for the Tiges.

With the arrival of Damien Hardwick, the Gold Coast Suns are anticipated to elevate their performance in the upcoming 2024 season. Amidst this hopeful transition, Noah Anderson stands out as a player in his prime, poised to make a significant impact. Having secured 22 votes last year, Anderson enters his fifth season in the AFL with confidence and experience. His consistent performance is evident in his average of 26 touches over the past two seasons, showcasing his reliability and skill on the field. As the Suns strive for improvement under new leadership Anderson's presence and contributions will be crucial in driving the team towards success.
