World Cup Preview - Australia v Peru

Wednesday 27/06/2018 - 12am
Odds: Peru $2.40 Draw $3.25  Australia $3

The Socceroos face another must-win clash as they look to keep their World Cup hunt alive. They will play Peru on Wednesday night at 12 am in Sochi (Fisht Stadium).

After a gallant 2-1 defeat to France, Australia went down 1-0 early on against Denmark. However, they showed great resolve to level the score through another Mile Jedinak penalty goal. In the end, the two sides couldn’t be separated and both took a point.

So the equation for Australia in this game will be to defeat Peru by around 1-2 goals and hope France beats Denmark in the final Group C match.

Against Denmark, Australia showed a more attacking style compared to the first game. Matthew Leckie was one of the best on the park and Arzani, at 19 years old, looks to be a superstar in the making. The majority of Australian fans would love to see him start this game against Peru. Especially due to a shoulder injury to Nabbout. Robbie Kruse also hasn't been at his best for a while and is probably due for a start on the bench. In a surprising move, Tim Cahill hasn't been subbed on in both games so hopefully, he can get on the park for maybe the last time in a Socceroos jersey. In this matchup against Peru, Australia will need to find the goals that probably doesn't involve the VAR or penalties. They haven't scored a goal from the field of play as the 2 goals have both been via a Mile Jedinak penalty goal. Which will be especially true against a Peru side that has conceded just 2 goals in 2 games.

For Peru, they've played in back to back, close 1-0 losses against Denmark and France. A missed penalty against Denmark is proving to be the difference as Peru now have no chance of qualifying for the next stage. But while they haven't won a game, they can still hold their heads high at this World Cup with another good performance against Australia. There's no doubt they will be looking to end the Socceroos campaign with attacking football. They haven't found the back of the net just yet but Australia's defence can be broken down.

Head to Head

Australia and Peru have never met in a World Cup, Tournament or International Friendly.

Players to Watch

Daniel Arzani provided an almost instant impact off the bench against Denmark and that will hopefully see him earn more playing time against Peru. The 19-year-old is the future of the Socceroos and his performance at this World Cup will also have a few major clubs around the World looking his way.

Aaron Mooy has been awesome for Australia in both games with his attack on the ball and he's also been solid helping the defence. He almost broke the deadlock against Denmark with a long-range strike so hopefully, he can produce another great display to get the Socceroos into the next stage.

Peru captain Paolo Guerrero has had an interesting World Cup, to say the least. Before the tournament, he was embattled in a drug ban but was cleared to play in the end. The 34-year-old will likely be playing in his last World Cup game and possibly his last ever game for Peru. So there's some motivation for him to finish on a high note.

Peru's goalkeeper Pedro Gallese has been really solid in this World Cup having survived an attacking onslaught against France and only conceding 1 goal against Denmark. The goal conceded against France was from a deflection so he can count himself unlucky. So he'll be the key in keeping Australia off the scoreboard in this clash.

Prediction

The odds are incredibly tight in this contest with Peru just on top at $2.50. But with the extra motivation of qualifying for the Knockout stage, Australia should come out firing. Peru's defence can be vulnerable as they showed against France and Australia will look to do the same. In the end, I do see both sides scoring in this contest. Australia has scored a goal in both games and there's every chance they'll score once again. While Peru hasn't scored a goal in the 2018 World Cup, I believe that will give them something to aim for in an otherwise, dead rubber for them. The Both Teams To Score bet has saluted in both of Australia's World Cup games so far and overall in the last 7 overall games of this World Cup, it's 6-1.
Both Teams To Score $1.80
