OVERVIEW
The 2020 edition of the Memsie Stakes looks set to be a cracker. With a frenetic speed map in place, it’s anyone’s guess how this will play out. Perhaps runners will need to be right on the speed among the main chances to have any hope, or maybe the hot speed will set the race up for swoopers such as Cascadian? Whichever the case, it looks set to be an interesting race, with the in-form Behemoth heading the market ahead of proven Group 1 winners Savatiano, Arcadia Queen and Mystic Journey.
SPEED MAP
Looks to be a very speedy edition of the Memsie Stakes, with a few notable jets engaged, including; Begood Toya Mother, Savatiano and Streets of Avalon. They’ll bustle for the early lead and maybe Iconoclasm will join them from gate 1 also. Arcadia Queen and Glenfiddich look like the next couple, along with Gatting, Mystic Journey and Harlem. Expect frantic tactics early.
KEY RUNNERS
- ARCADIA QUEEN ($7)
This former Western Australian galloper has shown she can mix it with the best, scoring Group 1 success across the pond in 2018. She’s held her own since coming across but has yet to taste Group 1 success in Sydney or Melbourne yet. She gets a great chance here after a strong first up performance and looks to get a nice run in behind the leaders here. Looks a likely improver back to drier ground.
- SAVATIANO ($4.80)
Was superb winning first up at Group 2 level at Caulfield, defeating Arcadia Queen in the process. She’s raced extremely well on Soft tracks, but arguably just as good on dry tracks. She’s up against a tough speed map here, with a few front runners engaged she may have to work early. With a fair run here, she looks a deserving favourite.
- GLENFIDDICH ($10)
This talented 3-year-old colt is first up here after nearly nabbing Group 1 success in his last run. He’s been supremely effective beyond 1200m; excluding his run on Heavy, he scored a brilliant win in the Mornington Sires and placed at Group 1 level. Gets in here with only 50.5kg - 6.5kg less than his nearest opponent.
BLUEY’S PICK
- GLENFIDDICH ($10)
This race looks wide open, but I’m siding with Glenfiddich, who looks to have a tonne of upside this prep. He gets in with an incredibly light weight and looks well placed at 1400m. He draws a positive gate, is likely to sit behind the leaders and can pounce in the straight. Looks a great chance at a decent price.
