OVERVIEW
The first of four Group 1 races on Doncaster Mile sees a strong field of 15, in one of the top 2-year-old races of the Sydney Carnival. Golden Slipper third place getter Mamaragan heads the field and is definitely the one to beat. He is certainly not bulletproof however, and many of these can take the next step and improve greatly on the day. Great race to kick off Group 1 proceedings.
SPEED MAP
Pace should be very quick here with a number of speedy runners drawn toward the outside. Among them is Holyfield, who is most likely to vy for the lead. Favourite Mamaragan draws barrier 2 however, and may elect to hold Holyfield out. Cultural Amnesia, Prague, Bartley, Larimer Street and Mission River are all likely to be prominent too.
KEY RUNNERS
- MAMARAGAN ($3.20)
Looks to be a deserving favourite here after a very solid third in the Golden Slipper. He took the shortest route home that day and finished just 2.8L away from the talented Farnan. His run prior to that was very smart, winning by a 1.3L at Randwick in the Group 2 Skyline.
- PRAGUE ($8.00)
Was heavily unsuited in the Slipper after getting bumped at the start and racing keen throughout. He battled away fairly in a leader dominated race. Start prior to that he was excellent in the Pago Pago, winning well in the worst ground. Looks a great chance to improve here.
- GLENFIDDICH ($26)
Looks a decent chance here at odds after a very impressive win at Mornington last start. He sat behind the leader and loomed around the turn, before showing late strength to draw away from the field. Back to 1400m is a slight question mark for mine, but he looks a chance at odds.
BLUEY’S PICK
- PRAGUE ($8.00)
Favourite Mamaragan maps well here and is definitely the one to beat, but I think Prague has the most upside here and has the scope to improve. Unsuited last start and still managed to battle away fairly. Getting a fair price here to find out.
