OVERVIEW
With five former Group 1 winners engaged here, it’s a little hard to believe this field is still just three years old. A couple of smarties fly the flag for New Zealand but the Aussie’s dominate the top of the market here through the likes of Shadow Hero, Castelvecchio and Warning, who have all been superb early in their career.
SPEED MAP
This race looks devoid of true early speed and might be muddling early but that doesn’t mean we won’t see a change in tactics and see someone go forward. The most likely will be; Reloaded, Scorpz and Get The Idea. Sherwood Forest might also push forward from the widest barrier. Will be interesting to see where the rest of the field finishes up, with many runners mapped just worse than midfield.
KEY RUNNERS
- SHADOW HERO ($3.10)
His first up return at 1400m was as expected, finding a position toward the rear and boxing on fairly in the straight. He then exploded at Randwick last start over 1600m, putting in scintillating sectionals over the final 400m. He’ll no doubt be better suited over this distance and looks hard to beat.
- WARNING ($6.50)
Had a meteoric rise through the grades last prep, which ultimately culminated in winning the Group 1 Vic Derby by a dominant 3.25L. His returns have been very promising again over unsuitable trips. He’ll be much better suited out to 2000m here but it still might be a touch short of his best. Still right in the hunt here.
- SHERWOOD FOREST ($10)
Intriguing runner who, like Te Akau Shark in the previous, has also won at Group 1 level over in New Zealand. Last start took out the Group 1 NZ Derby at Ellersie by 1.25L. That form may be just shy of what’s required here but he’s definitely in with a shot.
BLUEY’S PICK
- SHADOW HERO ($3.10)
I think there are two main chances here; Shadow Hero and Warning. There isn’t much between the two but I believe Warning will be suited over slightly further. Shadow Hero was poorly suited last time out and getting out to 2000m should be all he needs to improve sharply on that run.
