OVERVIEW
The Thousand Guineas is the Fillies edition of the Caulfield Guineas and is also run over the mile. A smaller field of eleven runners will line up here with Flit the short-priced favourite. Godolphin has a strangle hold on this race, saddling up three of the top chances. After a barnstorming run, Amphitrite took out the race last year.
SPEED MAP
Tempo should be moderate with Acting the most likely to take up the running from I Am Eloquent and Southbank. Barbie’s Fox might use the inside rail to advantage and be prominent. Godolphin’s charge will likely come from the back of the field with their three runners all likely to be position in the rear half of the field.
KEY RUNNERS
- LYRE ($5.50)
Began her career in brilliant fashion, winning three of her first four starts and then finishing close up in the Golden Slipper. Has been solid in each run this prep, finishing within 3L of the winner in all three starts. Looks like she has been wanting this distance and now gets a great chance here.
- FLIT ($2.30)
Only has the one win to her name despite bring some seriously quality form into this race. First up ran well behind the talented Libertini before coming up against a few of these last start when finishing 9th. She was held up badly during the straight and still finished within 3L of the eventual winner Acting. Will take some beating.
- ACTING ($10)
Has now scored three wins on the trot and is rising through the grades impressively. Last start she led them along before kicking at the 250m to score a comfortable 1.5L victory over the likes of Flit, Lyre and Tenley. Should be able to lead them along here and if the chasers find trouble, there’s no reason she can’t win again.
BLUEY’S PICK
- FLIT ($2.30)
Comes up short here after her last start run where she was badly blocked yet still managed to finish within three lengths of Acting that day. Jump to 1600m won’t hurt. This is a fairly similar field today and with a better run she should be winning this. Deserved favourite.
